Southampton vs Arsenal Preview

The congestive EPL festive fixtures continue and Arsenal will be hosted by Southampton on the New Year’s Day. The Gunners will hope to leapfrog the Saints in the race for fourth spot.

Arsenal will travel to the South Coast without the suspended Oliver Giroud. Arsene Wenger has also revealed that Welbeck faces a late fitness test. He however confirmed that Walcott is fit enough to earn a start. The Saints will miss the services of Morgan Schneiderlin who was suspended in the last clash with Chelsea.

The Saints will be confident in this tie as they have avoided a defeat in the previous three ties with Arsenal at the St. Mary’s Stadium. The Saints have also lost only 2 points form a winning position this season. The Gunners, however, have not lost to the Saints in an EPL tie since 2002.

Good Luck to the Gunners.

Arsenal linked to Petr Cech

Petr Cech’s agent has encouraged Arsenal and Liverpool to make their bids for the Chelsea Goal keeper. Cech has become the second choice goal keeper after the arrival of Thibaut Courtois. Even though his agent has been quoted saying his move his unlikely, speculation suggests that he could be on the move.

Arsenal will gain much more from the experience of Cech. I don’t believe that the acquisition of Cech will be a luxury one but will bolster the goalkeeping options for Arsenal. Ospina and Szczesny have a lot to learn from Cech who I believe is still one of the best goal keepers around.

Again, it is about that time we have to keep up with rumors from all corners. Hope Wenger will grab whatever player that will improve the squad.

Arsenal just cannot hold on

Arsenal fans will be delighted with the score line after being completely dominated by Liverpool for major parts of the game. In fact, the Gunners had the lowest possession since 2003. It seemed like the boys were suffering from stage flight. Perhaps last encounter’s mauling was still fresh in their minds.

Arsenal looked on course to escape with a lucky win against the 10-man Reds apart from loss of concentration in defending the 95th minute Liverpool’s’ corner. Up to now we have never learnt how to defend corners. Just like we don’t know how to take them.

Both sides could not afford a loss. However, Arsenal might feel lucky or frustrated depending on which side of the coin you look at it. They could have won the game and they could have deservedly lost. None of those happened.

Liverpool vs Arsenal: News, Preview and Prediction

Many Arsenal fans won’t relish the memory of this fixture last season. Arsenal were abysmally thrashed by Liverpool. By 20 minutes the score line read Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal.

This season, Liverpool FC have been pretty awful. Repeating their stellar performance of last season is far from imagination. Since the departure of Suarez and injury to Sturridge, the Reds have failed to rekindle the performance of last season.

Arsenal will be full of confidence ahead of the tie after an impressive win over Newcastle. Despite injury concerns of the Ox, Ramsey, Monreal and Walcott, the Gunners have plenty of options to give Liverpool a torrid time.

Prediction: Both teams are struggling to live the glory of their past. However, Arsenal has had the best of Liverpool over the recent history. In fact, the Gunners have lost twice to Liverpool in the last 14 matches. With that in mind, I believe the Gunners will prove to be too much for Liverpool.

Will Arsenal get another Henry?

The Arsenal legend announced his retirement from football to join Sky Sports as a pundit. Not only Arsenal fans that have plenty of memories about Thierry but also supporters of other football clubs around the world. The French International has unparalleled success in football world.

Since his departure, Arsenal has not been able to land / recruit a player of Henry’s caliber. Arsene Wenger will admit to say how easier it is to manage a team with star players like Henry.

Arsene has been known for nurturing talents. It will not be long before he develops a player to hit the heights of players like Henry. The problem is whether the club will be able to sustain such players due to the rigid wage structure and diminished competitiveness in football.

Monaco it is: Wenger handed dream draw

The draw for the UCL was out and Arsenal were paired with French side Monaco. Before the draw Wenger had joked about seeking religious intervention to get a favorable draw. His prayers seem to have been answered as the football deities offered him a reprieve.

Arsene Wenger will be delighted to have drawn Monaco. Probably the fairest draw he could get. Additionally, Le Professor will have a reunion with a club he spent seven years in charge.

Arsenal cycle of dreadful draws seems to have come to an end this season. Even though Arsenal has not met Monaco in a competitive match, Wenger will relish the encounter.

Arsenal has now the opportunity to progress to the quarter finals after being handed what seem as a kind draw. The team and the manager cannot be afforded with excuses this time. They should/must beat Monaco (no pressure).

Impressive Arsenal thrashes on-form Newcastle at the Emirates

Arsenal’s start stop campaign continued. When they are form, Arsenal are a formidable force. Newcastle just like Galatasaray were left wobbling after getting thrashed by the Gunners. Two goals apiece by Cazorla and Giroud were enough to finish the job.

Arsenal were impressive on the day. They displayed an entertaining performance accompanied by a plethora of attacks on the opponent’s goal. That what the fans like. Even with a makeshift defense that looked nervy at times, the Gunners decimated almost all the attacks that came from the Magpies.

What has been lacking this season in this Arsenal side is consistency. With this win, Arsene Wenger will be desperate that the team capitalizes on this performance to get positive results in the remaining games.

But for now, Oh! Oh! To be a Gooner.

The latest Arsenal news below.

Arsenal vs Newcastle: News, preview and prediction

The Gunners will entertain the on form Magpies in a late EPL kick off at the Emirates. Newcastle are on a good run and currently are level with Arsenal on points. However, recent history favors Arsenal as they have lost one of the last 14 encounters with Newcastle. They have won all the last five encounters with Newcastle.

Both teams face crucial absenteeism ahead of the tie. Arsenal face massive defensive injury crisis. With Monreal and Kolscieny ruled out and Chambers suspended, Arsene Wenger will have to deploy a makeshift defense. Ramsey has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Newcastle also have a fair share of absentees. Notably, Sissoko and Steven Taylor will miss with suspensions. Coloccini also remains a big doubt for the encounter.

Prediction: The Gunners have displayed mix performances in recent weeks making prediction a nightmare. However, my intuition tells me Arsenal will edge past the Magpies.

CL: Arsenal wins but misses top spot

Arsenal never ceases to amaze. The Gunners produced a stellar performance to humble Galatasaray despite an inauspicious performance away to Stoke City on Saturday. Two goals apiece from Ramsey and Podolski ensured that the Gunners walked out of Turkey with all the three points. And Oh My! what a strike by Ramsey! Definite contender for the goal of the year.

Arsenal finished the group level with BVB but the Germans have a superior goal difference. That means that Arsenal will face either Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, FC Porto, Monaco or one of PSG or Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger will rue a missed chance to top the group courtesy of the dreadful draw with Anderlecht. For them to proceed past the round of 16, they need to get tougher regardless of the opponent. The soft underbelly needs to harden.

Arsenal Wenger has lost the touch but abusing him is distasteful

Football is supposed to be fun. Abuse and unruly behavior beats the purpose of a unifying factor in football. On Saturday, Arsene Wenger and the team met the wrath of frustrated fans who hurled unprintable insults to them at the train station.

We all understand that Arsenal fans are frustrated. Wenger is not the same as he was a decade ago. As a result, Arsenal regression is there for all to see. However, abuses and severe vilification of Wenger are just not right.

Arsene Wenger is the villain at the moment but fans should not forget what he has done. Frustrated fans can express their opinions through polite means rather than abuses.

Another fruitless outing for Arsenal at Stoke City

Dear oh dear, Arsenal crumbled again. Arsenal first half self destruction allowed Stoke City to put three past the shambolic defense. It was one of those games. Abject defending, insipid attack and lack of spirit. Arsenal fans must be livid at such lack of character by the team especially in the first half.

Stoke city didn’t wait for long before getting in front. Crouch scored within the first 20 seconds of the game. Arsenal defenders were absolutely oblivious of the danger their opponents posed in counter attacks and set pieces. In the process, they let in three easy goals.

Arsenal’s resurgence in the second half wasn’t enough as Stoke held on. Their spirited second half performance was not helped by the sending off of Chambers for a second yellow.

Arsene Wenger’s post match interview drawing out positives from the match doesn’t help the situation. Arsenal looked ill prepared for this game despite their repeated hoodoo at Britannia Stadium. After a recent winning run, the defeat at Stoke sees the team back to square one.

In Arsene we trust?

Stoke City Vs Arsenal: Preview And Prediction

Arsenal face a heavy task when they face the Potters in the weekend premier league match on Saturday. Stoke City has been a perennial bogey team for the Gunners who are yet to record a PL win at the Britannia Stadium (D2 L4) since the return of Stoke in premier league in the year 2009.

The Gunners are on a good run after winning their three consecutive games and keeping clean sheets in those games as well. Stoke are on a run of three back to back losses. The Stoke-Arsenal match will be a hotly contested one owing to previous experiences.

All eyes will be on Wenger to see how he will alter his team to get a win at Britannia Stadium something he has failed in the previous seven occasions. For the Gunners to get a result at Britannia, they also need to overcome the mental block that has hampered their performances.

Prediction: It will be a physical encounter as always and Arsenal need to step up. They need to fire from all cylinders other than depend on the man of the moment, Alexis.

Prediction: Stoke City 0-1 Arsenal

Sanchez rescues Gunners again

It has become perennial now. Arsenal scoring late and Sanchez being in the mix. Arsenal left it late again versus Southampton in a tight match at the Emirates. The win helped Arsenal to move within three points behind the Saints who have had a blistering start to the season.

The Saints were crippled by injuries and finished the closing stages of the game with 10 men. Something that fell in favor of the valiant Gunners. Sanchez scored his 14th strike in 22 appearances to put the Gunners in front. He never fails to oblige when we need him.

It was another match that tested the nerves of the Gunners. Taking each game at a time will give the Gunners confidence that has been short. Roll on to the next game. Here we come the Potters!

Did Wenger deserve the ‘Wenger out’ banner?

On Saturday clash between Arsenal and West Brom, a provocative banner by a section of Arsenal fans was held bearing the message,” Arsene - thanks for the memories, but it’s time to say goodbye”. Are the fans going too far with this?

Arsene Wenger was adamant to respond to questions asked regarding the banner. However, questions will be asked whether the disgruntled fans have a point. The timing of the fans to express their feelings was probably wrong especially after two wins in a row. Had it been brandished after the Man United loss things would have been different.

Arsenal fans need to be united to support the team. Whether the manager stays or leaves, the support for the team should be unrivaled.

Speaking of Arsenal's striking options, who do you guys think is better upfront, Danny Welbeck vs Olivier Giroud.

Who’s next? Gunners win at Hawthorns

It was not an inspiring encounter but the Gunners edged the lackluster Baggies to claim all the three points at Hawthorns. It was a win that capped a fabulous week for the boys.

A second half header by Welbz remained the difference in the encounter. The Gunners moved two positions in the league table and are within the touching distance for the 4th spot.

Wenger will be impressed by the performance of Cazorla whose cross led to the winning goal. The diminutive Spanish midfielder was without doubt the best player on the pitch.

A good win for the Gunners and we roll on to the next. It’s all roller-coaster for the Arsenal fans at the moment.

West Brom vs Arsenal preview

Arsenal and West Brom will lock horns at Hawthorns in the lunchtime kick off. The Gunners will be looking to avoid a third consecutive loss. West Brom will also look to avoid a third consecutive loss after losing to Newcastle and Chelsea.

The Gunners currently sit at 8th position in the EPL. For the Baggies, a win could take them within three points of the Champions League spot. It is that tight in the mid table.

Arsenal has not lost to the Baggies in the previous 7 matches (W0 D2 L5). The Gunners have won thrice and drawn twice in their last 5 visits to the Hawthorns stadium. Clearly, the Gunners are the favorites in this tie.

Good luck to the boys!

Impressive Arsenal guns down BVB

Arsenal fans can afford a glimpse of smile at least for now. The Gunners beat BVB 2-0 at the Emirates to confirm their progression to the knockout stage.

It was a nonchalant performance. Arsenal were able to hold on to their lead something that has been incongruous to the team in the recent matches.

The Gunners made a dream start to the match as Sanogo got the goal in the first two minutes. In the 57th minute Sanchez made it 2-0 with a sumptuous curling effort. What a revelation has he been!

Hopefully, the Gunners can build on this victory. It can bring back the lost confidence for the rest of the season. Go! Go! You Gunners!

Is Wenger too stringent to change?

The Gunners boss has been accused of being stubborn and resistant to change. The Frenchman has been criticized for being stringent in his tactics and his business in the transfer market. His character has been linked to the repeated failure of the Gunners in the past decade.

It is difficult to defend these accusations against Wenger. Over time, Arsenal have played the same way yet expect different results. Tactical opponents have dominated Arsenal because of the one-dimensional approach to games.

In the transfer market, Wenger will fail to address areas that even a casual fan can point out blind folded. This has led to consistent failure for the Gunners. It is very disturbing to see teams around us going forward whereas Arsenal is going in opposite direction.

Do you believe Wenger’s philosophy will turn around Arsenal fortunes?

Shambolic Arsenal lose at home

Like many of you, I am still in shock how the three points slipped again yesterday. Manchester United were there for the taking but Arsenal’s shambolic finishing and defending cost them the three points.

It has reached a point that you wonder whether Arsenal will ever win a game. Whether they play bad or good they lose. After yesterday’s loss to a clueless United, one may be wondering how low the confidence of the players is.

Arsenal had the best of the chances in the first half. They couldn’t take any. As I have said, on paper Arsenal looks a formidable force. However, lack of leadership and decisive players keeps on biting the Gunners.

They say luck favors the brave. How we conceded a goal after United had zero shots on target is baffling. The defeat to United means that we have won once in 15 matches against them. Another horrendous record against a big team. It is an easy feat choosing which of the two clubs is bigger.

We are now out of the title challenge. It looks like our fight for the 4th spot will start early this season. It is frustrating to see a promising season that would define our club ebbing away in familiar fashion.

Arsenal falters again to plunge more Gooners into deep frustrations

On Saturday, I wrote an article about how Arsenal (knowingly or unknowingly) frustrates many fans around the world and exactly a day later they were not shy to do that. Going ahead against Swansea and then squandering the lead within a span of less than 3 minutes.

Alexis Sanchez work rate was again cancelled by the abject defending when under little pressure. I am afraid the patience of the Chilean might run out soon.

Consequently, Arsene Wenger seems to have thrown in the towel to the title race. Mind you it is only November! In all truth, I think Arsenal are out of the title race. I don’t see how they will bridge a gap of 12 points against the in-form Blues.

Another season, another failure in all fronts. For Arsenal fans our hopes will need to be postponed for next season like it has always been.

The latest Arsenal news below.

Are you frustrated to support Arsenal?

I read an article at ESPN sports about Arsenal being the most frustrating club to support. Saying yes or no is not an easy decision but I think the author of the article had a point.

Following the Champions League capitulation against the Belgian minnows one couldn’t agree more with the statement. Arsenal is a club that offers you wings to fly but crashes you the moment you want to take off. It’s a club for the past 10 seasons been described as ‘nearly there but far’.

The worst thing in football, and even in life, is to accumulate hope only for it to be crashed in the 11th hour. Arsenal has well scripted this scenario season in season out. Last season, for instance, I thought we would win the EPL only to capitulate in the closing stages of the showdown. In fact, it is ludicrous how quickly we slipped from being title contenders to fall into the mediocrity of scrapping for fourth. Paradox, ah?

Arsenal is a club well placed to succeed. Their brand of football and tradition is a good platform for success. How success repeatedly eludes them is inexplicable!

Sloppy Arsenal allow Anderlecht to claw back

Wow! Arsenal fans didn’t see that coming. At 3-0 the game was over and beyond Anderlecht reach. This was not so. Arsenal fans were treated with inexplicable buffoonery from Arsenal defense.

Arsenal dominated majority of the game but looked sloppy when caught out on the break by the Belgian side. They were able to soak in the Anderlecht attacks and went on to score three goals. Arteta scored from the spot, Sanchez scored a rebound from a free kick and the Ox scored the third from a brilliant run. At this point, Arsenal looked in complete control of the game.

In a surprising twist, Anderlecht became a threat and troubled the disconcerted Arsenal defense. From 3 nil down they managed to grab a draw.

With that result, Arsenal spurned the chance to make it to the next qualifying stage. They have also lost ground to challenge BVB for the top spot. It looks like we will have to accept the second best mantra again.

Sanchez Trip to the Top Continues with Every Week

The Premier League has witnessed such a flow of talent, like Cesc Fabregas and Angel di Maria, in the summer that it would be easy to sweep Alexis Sanchez under the carpet. The former Barcelona and Udinese forward cost Arsenal £35 million, which is almost half that of Di Maria’s transfer fee. Yet, the consistency and the impact that Sanchez has had at Arsenal may be more important than that of Di Maria at United. Incredibly, Sanchez is now a third favourite at 14/1 in the Premier League top scorer betting odds from Betfair.

Since the 25-year-old is not a proper centre forward, he is unlikely to challenge Diego Costa or Sergio Aguero, who remain the favourites, for the Golden Boot award at the end of the season. For the impact that he has made and for the relatively low transfer fee, Sanchez could easily be named as the Player of the Year if he continues with his impressive form.

Sanchez scored two more goals against Burnley to help Arsenal get their third consecutive win in all competitions. This victory also helped them gain a major advantage over Liverpool and Manchester United, who suffered defeats last weekend.

Arsene Wenger has not been shy to praise Sanchez since the start of the season. It would also be the case of those connected with Arsenal. The applause has not been unequivocal from all corners since the likes of Diego Costa, Di Maria, and Cesc Fabregas have been grabbing all the attention so far. Sanchez appears to be moving into the limelight, which seems more than justified, after his goals against Sunderland and Burnley.

Admittedly, these are two teams struggling near the bottom of the league. They also have one of the worst defensive records in Europe’s top leagues, but that should not take anything away from Sanchez and his incredible statistics. It would have been fair to expect goals or assists from Sanchez. The Chilean, though, has also contributed in the defensive side of things, which is a major boost for the club. Sanchez has seven goals in eight league starts, while he has also set up two more. A bigger contribution comes in his ability to prevent the opposition from starting the attacks. Despite being a forward, he has ranked as one of the best tacklers in this Arsenal team with an average of 2.3 tackles per game. This statistic is bettered by only Mathieu Debuchy, Mathieu Flamini, and Calum Chambers (all of whom are focused on defending). It is this workrate that appears to have helped him overcome the tag of being the ‘next Mesut Ozil’.

The German international did not only cost a lot of money, but he also came with a reputation of not giving 100% in the defensive area of the pitch. This has been proven by several statistics not to be the truth, but the undesirable reputation continues to stick with Ozil. Sanchez is highly unlikely to be classified under that category going by the statistics he has set in his first few months at Arsenal.

The high-profile defeats against the likes of Chelsea have seen Arsenal written off as title challengers this season. A look at the table, though, reveals that the Gunners are just three points behind Manchester City, who appear to be firmly in the title race with Chelsea. It is vital that Wenger’s team carry this form after the international break when they take on the likes of Manchester United and Southampton.

This good run of form has seen Arsenal’s position improve in the eyes of bookmakers. At the start of the season, they were placed as the fourth favourites – or even behind Liverpool on some occasions – for the Premier League top four finish odds. The back-to-back victories, though, has substantially helped them and they are now third behind City and Chelsea. Betfair backs Arsenal at a much healthier 4/11 to finish in the top four.

Meanwhile, Sanchez has struggled for a perfect home at his previous clubs like Udinese and Barcelona. If he continues in the same vein of form, the 25-year-old could be a very important player for Arsenal. He only has the best years ahead of him.

Arsenal cruise over Burnley

Predictably, the game between Arsenal and Burnley was a contest of attack versus defense. Burnley defended well and appeared to frustrate Arsenal until the man of the moment, Alexis Sanchez broke the stalemate.

For the first 70 minutes the crowd at Emirates grew impatient as the Gunners superiority dominance could not be converted into goals. However, a cross from Chambers met Sanchez who headed the ball past the impressive Burnley goalkeeper.

A minute or so later, Chambers scored the second after Welbeck’s shot was saved by the Burnley goalkeeper. A third goal was scored in the injury time by the ever impressive Alexis Sanchez. The goal made it 10 in 12 appearances.

O! Oh! To be a Gooner.

Do you think Chelsea could replicate the ‘Invincibles’?

Chelsea is a team on form. So far they are unbeaten in the league. Having played 9 games, they have won 7 and drawn two away games at both Manchester clubs. Many pundits have fancied the current team to match the achievements of Wenger’s men in the 2003/2004 season.

As a Gooner, I don’t think any team will ever match the ‘Invincibles’. The ‘Invincibles’ were characterized with pugnacious attacking football. This style is incongruous with any of the Mourinho’s side despite the attacking talent in his current team. Their late goals against the Manchester clubs show that Mourinho’s mindset is to protect the lead by defending. The same could not be said of the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’.

It is still early in the season but football experts have not shied from comparing the current Chelsea team to the famous ‘Invincibles’. Do you think the current Chelsea team is as good as the ‘Invincibles’?

English flavour at Arsenal again

It used to be a French revolution at Arsenal but now the club bares a distinct English appearance, with a large part of Roy Hodgson’s England team formed under Arsene Wenger.

There were five Gunners in the party to play San Marino and Estonia - Kieran Gibbs, Calum Chambers, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck. It would have been six if Theo Walcott was fit and while some of them are home grown at the Emirates Stadium and some have been bought in, the fact remains - no team supplied more players to the England squad in the last round of internationals than Wenger’s. Arsenal’s England players aren’t merely making up the numbers either. Gibbs is evidently a rival to Leighton Baines for the left-back spot, starting in place of the Everton man against San Marino. Chambers has been touted along with the Toffees’ John Stones as the future of the England defence, a tag Oxlade-Chamberlain has carried for a while in midfield. Wilshere is no longer a player for the future after the retirements of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard and Welbeck is the foil to the captain and main striker, Wayne Rooney.

They all have crucial roles to play, be it now or in the future, and the same is true at club level. Gibbs, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere and Welbeck are four of Arsenal’s highest-scoring EuroFantasyLeague players. Chambers numbers are affected by the fact that Arsenal have kept only one Premier League clean sheet all season but the ex-Southampton youngster is still learning at this level. Give him time and he should become one of the highest-rated defenders anywhere.

Wenger had often said he wanted his Arsenal side to have more of an English flavour. At times it felt almost like tokenism, a way to keep at bay critics of his foreign imports. But the manager has proven a man of his word and it’s no exaggeration to say Arsenal are setting a trend that, if it was followed by other clubs, would leave the national team in much better shape.

Walcott’s return to fitness will only help matters further. The 25-year-old is back in training and, having been around the Arsenal and England set-up since 2006, is something of a young veteran. The prospect of Walcott linking up with Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere and Welbeck is an appetising one for Arsenal - and better yet, it can be replicated for England too.

Arsenal need more players of Sanchez caliber

The expensive signing of the Chilean from Barcelona FC has justified his value for money. His fighting spirit is admirable. You cannot doubt his commitment. The Chilean is the top goal scorer for Arsenal with 8 goals in all competitions.

The Chilean has been on form. Hitting goals right, left and center. Amid the sluggish performances around his teammates, Sanchez has refused to be dragged down the mediocrity path.

The Chilean has showed the spirit highlighted by Aaron Ramsey in the previous season. Arsenal players should use him as a template to improve their performances.

Arsenal Legends and Misfits: Would they have what it takes to play poker with the world’s elite?

As Arsenal fans, we’ve all enjoyed witnessing Lukas Podolski stick it to Spurs this week when he offered a riposte to a BBC tweet that suggested he may be on his way to White Hart Lane. If anything it offered a little light-hearted comedy for a season of indifferent results, thus far.

So, with Podolski’s jibe in mind, we thought we’d offer a feature with a slice of light hearted comedy itself and look back at some of Arsenal’s legends and see if they have what it takes to mix it in the world poker.

It has been well publicised the amount of ex-professional footballers who have ventured into the professional ranks of poker once they hung their boots up. Ex-England striker Teddy Sheringham had a stint on the European Tour circuit, former Leeds United flop Tomas Brolin briefly flirted with poker after his premature retirement and also Dwight Yorke, not one to avoid flashy events, tried his luck too.

But maybe one of the most interesting stories was that of Gerard Pique this summer when he played at the World Series of Poker event in Las Vegas. Following Spain’s early exit from the competition, Pique decided to go up against the world’s elite to combat the disappointment of his national team’s performance in Brazil.

Although there aren’t many notable ex-professionals from Arsenal that have made a name for themselves in the world of the poke, it could possibly be only a matter of time. After the poker boom pre-millennium, the launch of the first online portal InterCasino followed which transformed the sport into a more mainstream and accessible hobby for many sports fans. Since then retired sportsmen and women have seen poker as an opportunity to continue in professional and competitive sport.
But which of the Arsenal legends to we think would excel in the world of poker? However, throwing the legends into the mix may be a little mundane, so we’ve thrown some wildcards in there, too.

Robert Pires – The flashy French winger was known for his flair and trickery and this would no doubt transcend to the poker table. Fearless when faced with his opposition, Pires would fit right in with the grandeur lifestyle a poker professional leads.

Sol Campbell – Calm under pressure, Campbell would be at home in heads-up situations where he would be cool and calculated. Methodical behind every move, Campbell would have the temperament to perform among poker’s elite.

Niklas Bendtner – Erratic, mischievous and completely unpredictable, Bendtner would be the European equivalent of poker loudmouth Phil Hellmuth. His annoying behavior would no doubt upset his opposition and he would be a nightmare to read.

Ian Wright – Loud and boisterous, Wrighty would definitely be fun to play against. However, would he use such patter to distract his opposition? Wrighty was underrated by many in the game during his stint at a pro, so maybe people would be foolish to do the same at the poker table.

Thierry Henry – Much like Pires, if anything Henry would bring class and confidence to the table. Never intimidated by opponents and always willing to take risks to accomplish his goals, you’d expect Henry to throw a few bluffs in with some uncompromising play.

What Arsenal players past and present do you think would perform well in the world of poker? Leave your comments below.

Per Mertesacker: Style need to change

Per Mertesacker has had his say on the current form of Arsenal. He says that Arsenal has not started the season in a fashionable way as they would have liked. Currently, the Gunners are 11 points off from the top in EPL.

Per is of the opinion that the Gunners passing is not as sharp as in the previous year. The Gunners have been accused of sterile dominance over the opponents. They are not able to convert their domination into wins.

Per said, "The passing game is not as efficient as last year. We are not at our best, we have to admit that. We have to be honest to ourselves and train harder.’’

Arsenal will face Sunderland at the stadium of light on Saturday. Good luck boys.

CL: Gibbs and Podolski save Arsenal blushes

Arsenal struggled for the major part of the match. In fact, before they scored they barely troubled the opponent’s goal. It was a dull, flat and uninspiring 88 minutes of action from Arsenal FC.

Arsene Wenger will remain worried in the manner which Arsenal is impotent in front of the opponent’s goal. In the yester night game, against a club that has won 2 of their last 33 CL games, Arsenal cannot be considered as favorites for CL unless they improve. Their defensive frailties were evident for everyone to see.

When Anderlecht scored in the 71st minute it seemed all over for the Gunners. However, late late goals from Gibbs and Podolski ensured Wenger’s birthday celebration was not ruined. It was a remarkable comeback.

At the end, what matters most is that the 3 points went to the Londoners. So was it Arsenal class or Anderlecht nervousness that won Arsenal the three points?

Arsenal face another injury ahead of CL tie with Anderlecht

Arsenal will have to deal with another injury blow. This time it’s the Colombian goalkeeper, David Ospina. The goalkeeper has been ruled out for the trip to Belgium to face Anderlecht.

With Szczesny suspended and the injury to Ospina, this leaves the rookie goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez as the remaining option. Despite the injury crisis Arsene Wenger is confident that Arsenal will get a result in the away trip.

The North London side will, however, need to up their game given their recent results as well as their away record in the Champions League. Good luck to the boys. No excuses this time.

Do you still believe in Wenger?

A dark cloud hangs over Emirates. The situation was confirmed by the Hull draw. After the Chelsea defeat, I bragged to my friends how we would go a long winning streak given our upcoming fixtures. It is not happening. Even the confidence of dominating ‘inferior’ teams is no longer there.

Recently, Ivan Gazidis said Wenger is irreplaceable. It is a statement to hard to agree with. With all due respect to Wenger, I don’t believe he has the same touch he had 10 years ago. I don’t see any other big club allowing any manager to stay on with only an FA trophy to show for 10 years! It is inexplicable. There is a strange form of mediocrity that has engrained Arsenal such that coming fourth severally is considered progress.

Bar from the Villa victory, Arsenal has been pretty awful. Players do not look spirited. Perhaps they are contented. ‘’With what?’’ one may ask. Shambolic performances have been coupled with ‘sterile’ dominance. One begs to ask, ‘what has happened?’

The predicament facing Arsenal is not new. It is the same old problems. Problem #1 is injuries. This is not new. Problem #2 is failure to address obvious weakness areas. This is not new either. Problem #3 is our style. The passing game seems to suit our rivals. Do you realize how easy it is to defend against Arsenal? How many times have you screamed ‘shoot ‘ while watching our games?

Crisis is a cliché but I am afraid that what is facing us. The manager and the players need to look themselves on the mirror. Nobody will help us from this crisis but ourselves.

Arsenal left wobbling after Hull draw

There you go fellows, another draw. Another abject and inauspicious performance. Another season we are out of the EPL challenge yet it is only the 9th game.

I now believe in time travel. It feels like 2011-2012 season again. At least in the mentioned season there was little hope. 2014/2015 was a season I expected Arsenal to be genuine league contenders. Paradox moments there. With the current trend, I even doubt we will get the perennial fourth spot.

It is frustrating seeing us concede p*ss goals. It is even more frustrating to see the team fail to convert its possession dominance into goals. The lack of ruthlessness in this Arsenal team is delirious.

It is now one win in the last seven EPL games and eleven points behind the league leaders. Seriously, I cant!

Wenger confirms Kolscieny is out

Arsene Wenger has confirmed the worst news to Arsenal fans. Laurent Kolscieny will not recover in time for the Saturday clash with Hull City. The Frenchman injured his Achilles on international duty with France.

His injury adds to the mounting injuries around Emirates at the moment. With Chambers suspended, Arsenal could face Hull City with a back four of Per, Gibbs, Monreal and Bellerin.

On the positive side, Arteta, Walcott and Gnabry are back in the squad.

Gazidis: Wenger is irreplaceable

Arsene Wenger is currently the longest serving manager in the EPL. Recently, the Frenchman celebrated his 18th anniversary as the manager of the Gunners. In his reign, Wenger has won 3 EPL titles and 5 FA cups. Gazidis has claimed that it is almost impossible to replace Wenger at Emirates.

Speaking to the club’s website, Gazidis said: ‘’The biggest challenge we’re going to face as a club is that, when the transition from Arsene to the next manager of our football club happens – and I don’t know what that’s going to be – that we come through that strongly.”

Do you believe that Wenger is irreplaceable?

The Walcott return could reignite the spark at Arsenal

The biggest encouragement for Arsenal is the imminent return for Walcott after missing action for a lengthy period. He suffered a knee injury during the FA match with Spurs.

Walcott has been an important player for Arsenal. In fact, his absence from action contributed to lack of pace in the team. The direct approach by Walcott injects pace in the team.

Actually, his absence from action has been linked to the poor form of Ozil. Ozil’s ability to pick a pass is well exploited by Walcott’s ability to bust beyond the opposition’s defense.

Arsene Wenger will hope that Walcott quickly returns to full fitness to fire Arsenal in search of another trophy.

Injuries, why Always us?

Recently, and as the case has been, when you peruse the sports papers, there is news about an injured Arsenal player. Ozil and Kolscieny are the recent culprits. What did we do to the football gods to deserve this?

So far these are the current injured players: Kolscieny (to be determined), Ozil (12 weeks), Debuchy (10 weeks), Giroud (10 weeks), Ramsey (6 weeks), Arteta (2 weeks), Sanogo (2 weeks), Gnabry (1 week) and Walcott (1 week).

With an accumulative total of 890 injuries since 2002 shows that something is seriously wrong. One has to question the training methods as well as the medical team. How many times have we been told an injured player is a few days away from action only to suffer setbacks ruling him out for a lengthy period?

Call it bad luck but something needs to be done.

Wojciech Szczesny: Chelsea are favorites for the EPL title

Szczesny has labelled Chelsea as the favorites to lift the EPL title on May. The Arsenal Goalkeeper admitted that Arsenal were beaten because of the ‘brilliance’ of the Blues.

Szczesny, speaking to reporters said: ‘I thought it was a very even game but Chelsea have an ability to keep clean sheets at home and I thought they were very good, they took their chances with two brilliant moments’.

The Gunners now remain 9 points off the leaders with 10 points from a possible 21 points.

Hi Gooners, Do you agree with Szczesny?

Arsenal undefeated run halted by Chelsea

It was a derby full of tension and action. A derby highlighted by dubious referee decisions, shovings and so forth. However, in the end the more clinical team was handed the victory. Arsenal sterile dominance didn’t help much.

Arsenal did not perform that bad. Actually, Arsenal matched the Blues in the whole game. The only difference was the brilliant run by Hazard to win a penalty and convert it.

It was not another capitulation for Arsenal but it leaves nothing to cheer about. In such a game, we expect our star players to shine but they don’t. Like I have always said, in such a game any goal will count. It doesn’t matter how it has been scored. Arsenal will tend to ‘walk it in’ which makes it impossible especially in well-organized defenses.

Arsenal are now 9 points behind the leaders. Mourinho extended his unbeaten streak by Wenger to 12. Are the Gunners already out of the EPL title race? We wait.

It's time Arsenal beats Chelsea

Arsenal will lock horns with Chelsea in a hotly contested derby tomorrow. It’s a derby that Arsenal will look to revenge last season’s 6-0 drabbing by Chelsea at Stamford.

Arsenal have not done well against sides who have finished above them. Actually, Arsenal has won once and lost 16 games in their last 20 away matches against teams who have finished above them. Horrible stats there.

Arsenal can beat Chelsea. However, for this to happen there is need for change in tactics. Observing a high defensive line is an obvious no. Wenger should urge his full backs to play more defensively against a team like Chelsea who are lethal in counter attacking.

Leadership will be crucial. In the absence of Arteta (captain), there is dire need for a leader on the pitch.
Good luck to the Arsenal. It is that time that Wenger breaks that duck against Mourinho.

Has Wenger done enough since his 1,000th match at Chelsea?

When Wenger was marking the anniversary for a millennium matches as the manager of Arsenal, things turned out sour. Arsenal were thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea in what was the 1000th game for Wenger. Like they say, in football anything can happen. However, failing to learn from mistakes is unforgivable.

The Gunners will travel to Stamford this weekend full of confidence after a confident victory over Galatasaray. The Gunners should expect a different game from the London rivals. So, has Wenger done enough to prevent a repeat of the previous shambolic performance at Stamford?

The Blues will, obviously, like the other top teams target our weak spots. The Gunners are sharp in attack but technically inept in defending. With Flamini expected to anchor the midfield, he needs to be on top alert to negate the threat offered by the Chelsea attack.

Arsenal too good for Gala in CL

As Arsene Wenger marked his 18th anniversary at Arsenal, he couldn’t get a better gift than the Arsenal exquisite performance that blushed away the Turkish side. The obvious star of the match was Danny Welbeck who scored a hat-trick with glorious finishes.

In the build-up of the match, Arsenal were lamenting the number of injuries around the team. However, yester night not even the flares thrown on the field by the Gala fans could obstruct the flair of Arsenal play. It was great stuff in all fairness.

The win ensures that Arsenal puts pressure on BVB for the top spot.

Arsenal needs to bounce back in CL

On Wednesday, Arsenal will face Galatasaray in the Champions League group stages. The Gunners will hope to bounce back from a string of disappointing results.

The Gunners still have the possibility of finishing top of the group. However, to keep those dreams alive they have to get a win against the other teams and hope that other teams will lose points elsewhere.

Arsenal will have to win the hard way given the number of injuries the team has suffered. Wenger will be hoping at least Jack Wilshere will pass the fitness test and shake off his injury to face the Turkish side.

Good luck to the boys.We believe in you.

Arsenal needs to find consistency amid injury crisis

Arsenal start of the season has been rocky. In six league matches, they have managed to win two. They have lost every game in all cup competitions excluding the CL qualifiers. This has been coupled with some diabolical performances filled with profligacy and lack of ruthlessness.

Injuries, a familiar aroma is now rooming around Emirates. A phenomenon the manager has admitted as a crisis ahead of the trip to Stamford. Currently, Debuchy, Walcott, Monreal, Sanogo, Giroud, Arteta and Ramsey are all injured. Remember its only September!

I was so expectant this season and still I am. With the new additions, I anticipated much improvement from last season. Seems like the more things change at Arsenal the more they remain the same.

With such an uninspiring start, Arsenal seem to be regressing. After making so much progress last season especially at the end, current results need to be improved. I believe things will turn around. When we start a winning streak it won’t stop.

Inconsistent Arsenal draws again

Arsenal will see that as two points lost rather than a point gained. A Mathieu Flamini error (again) allowed Spurs to score against the run of play. That was pretty much similar to that City game; failing to score while on top of the game.

Failing to beat Spurs really hurts. We all know they are not that good. Possessing the ball without punishing the lethargic Spurs in the first half cost us. Even more frustrating, the manner with which we conceded the goal was pathetic. A real gift it was to the Sp*ds.

The draw means that Arsenal have won two games out of six. We are six points behind Chelsea and we are traveling to Stamford the next EPL game. Frankly, I am worried.

The inconsistent results are a real cause of worry. Failing to beat this Spurs team is even more worrying. The growing injury list is scarily. Nothing seems to be going the Arsenal way at the moment.

The first Northern London derby of the season is here

On Saturday, Arsenal will lock horns with their eternal rivals, Tottenham. The show will feature Pochettino who will be in charge of the first north London derby against Wenger who has endured 46 premier league games between the two teams.

Arsenal will be boosted by the return of Per and Gibbs in their defense. Mathieu Flamini is also expected to feature as a further defensive option. The three were not utilized in the League Cup because of minor injuries.

If history is to go by, Arsenal has the advantage over Spurs at the Emirates. Spurs have just won twice at Arsenal in the entire Premier League era.

Good luck to Arsenal. There is no better opponent to beat than Spurs.

Arsenal bundled out of League Cup

Arsenal fans can now remove one of the trophies from the possible trophies that Arsenal can win. This trophy happens to be the League Cup. For those who are superstitious, probably I jinxed Arsenal on my article yesterday on what Arsenal could realistically win this season.

The Gunners suffered a shock loss from the well-organized Southampton team. The Gunners were in control in the first quarter of the game and took the lead through a sumptuous free kick by Alexis Sanchez. The Saints then equalized from the spot after a foul on Mane by Rosicky. Nathan Clyne scored the winner through a thunderous effort after a poor clearance from a corner.

Overall, the Gunners were not impressive but can draw encouragement from the performance of the youngsters. Oooh! Diaby played 60 minutes without getting injured. Good news, surely.

Arsenal face Tottenham on Saturday in the first north London derby of the season.

The latest Arsenal news below.

Which do you think Arsenal will realistically win?

Last season, Arsenal broke their 9 year trophy less era by winning the FA cup in a spectacular fashion. Another season is here and the Wenger boys will need to continue from where they left.

With the League Cup commencing today, the Gunners have a realistic chance of winning all four trophies. But because we try to be reasonable here, what trophies do you think are within the grasp of the Gunners?

I particularly think we have a realistic chance of winning either the FA cup, League Cup and probably the EPL. What your say Gunners?

Ozil is best in the middle

Recently, Ozil has been under fire due to his performances that have been described as substandard. The 42M million man, has been blamed for poor work rate and accused of 'stealing a living' at Emirates.

However, during the weekend the former Madrid man was played centrally where he oozed class that we all know he possesses. Arsenal completed 741 passes with Ozil being the center of it with a pass success rate of 91.5%.

For most part of this season, Ozil has been played on the left to accommodate the likes of Wilshere. At that position he has been ineffective something that has contributed to his poor form.

Hope Wenger now plays Ozil in the middle to get the best out of the World Cup winner.

Brilliant Arsenal finish off Villains in 3 minutes

It was a roller-coaster afternoon for the Gunners as they extended their unbeaten run at Villa Park to 16 games. Arsenal finished their business in three minutes and 12 seconds.

As expected, Aston Villa would represent a stern test given their blistering opening league campaign. Villa dominated the opening exchanges and almost scored a goal from a free kick that saw Szczęsny pull a brilliant save.

However, when Arsenal struck they never stopped. Goals from Ozil, Welbeck and an own goal ensured a comfortable afternoon for the Gunners. Most importantly, the effect of Ozil behind the striker was evident given his excellent performance. He got a much needed goal and an assist to answer his critics.

New boy, Danny Welbeck also opened his account by scoring the second goal.

Well done Wenger boys. That was more like it. Better days ahead.

Villa game a must win for Arsenal

This weekend, Arsenal will play Aston Villa at the Villa Park Stadium. The Gunners will be keen to bounce from their dismal defeat in the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger once claimed that unlike before, Arsenal has the mentality to move on quickly after a defeat. On Saturday, his team will be put to test by the Villains who have made the best league start in the last 16 years.

Arsenal has an impressive record at Villa Park. They last lost in this stadium in the year 1998. However, records are there to be broken. The Gunners need to be at their best to get past the well organized and astute Villa defense.

Good luck to the Gunners.

Why can’t Arsenal beat top teams?

I am always disturbed by the fact that Arsenal hardly beats decent teams in the recent years. Last season particularly, Arsenal was beaten by the top teams in an embarrassing way. Worryingly, in all the big games Arsenal always lose in a predictable manner.

Against small teams, the tactics of possessing the ball works. Against the top sides, they always exploit our weaknesses. Losing the ball upfront when the whole team is attacking, exposes the team from counter attacks. Without a dynamic defensive midfielder, more than often this leads to a goal.

When Paul Merson said that Arsenal are a ‘gillion’ miles away from winning the league (whatever that means), it sounded harsh but a critical look at it, there is some truthfulness in it.

A major factor contributing to this is the failure to strengthen all weakness areas in the summer. Have we ever started a season with a complete team with adequate depth in all the areas? This season particularly, the club was in a dire need for a defensive midfielder. After being linked to a million players, the club did not sign any player. The failure to do that has severely exposed the club against top teams. Take a close look at all the BVB goals and those that could have been.

The season is still raw. A quick rethinking is prudent at Emirates. Champions go by that name as they can beat the best. The way things are Arsenal look weaker than last season.

Sorry Arsenal downed by Dortmund in familiar fashion

As am writing this am furious. Furious because my beloved team lost in unfashionable manner. Teams lose games, but the way Arsenal lose is very frustrating.

In the CL tie vs Dortmund, Arsenal were woeful and uninspiring. To be fair enough, were it not for the brilliance of Szczesny and the profligacy of BVB we would be talking of a cricket score.

Our midfield looked disjointed. Our defense was in shambles. Our strike force was wasteful. It’s a night that showed how the two teams are miles apart (I painfully have to say that). Teams with a similar culture but a contrast in their playing style ad approach in big games.

Unless otherwise, the hopes of finishing first in the CL group looks dim for Arsenal. We all know what happens when you finish second, don’t we? It has happened in the recent years and the result? You get Bayern, Barcelona or Madrid. Its needless to say how the outcome of the results.

That was another away day, another awful loss in familiar fashion. When will we ever learn?

Debuchy injury sparks defense crisis at Arsenal

Arsenal right back, Mathieu Debuchy signed from Newcastle is likely to miss football action for a considerable time following the ankle injury sustained in the weekend clash against City.

It’s a worrying sign for Wenger as the injury leaves Arsenal with lack of depth. Following the commencement of Champions League football, the need to rotate the squad is paramount. With the water thin squad of Arsenal in defense, things are not looking pretty good.

To elaborate this situation further, other than Chambers, the Gunners do not have a cover for central defenders other than Per and Kolscieny. Mind you, Chambers will have to be deployed as a right following the injury to Debuchy. This means Hector Bellerin, a 16 year old with a single league cup appearance could feature for the first team.

Good luck Wenger, we have been here before.

Are Arsenal title contenders after the crunch draw with City?

Yesterday’s early kick off saw a vicious and exciting encounter between two England heavy weights. The crunchy game surely sent swings of momentum across the football world.

So, are Arsenal genuine contenders? In all fairness, a draw seemed a fair result. However, Wenger will be furious in the manner in which Arsenal conceded the equalizer. They allowed the champions back in the game and could have won it in the end. Fragility? Perhaps not (yes).

For Arsenal, a win would have been more welcome given their horrible statistics against teams who have finished in the top four. A win would improve their confidence as well as send a statement to other title rivals.

Genuine title contenders have to get results on the big occasions. For Arsenal particularly, they have a lot to prove on those occasions. They have to harden that soft underbelly that strong teams always exploit.

Exciting game at Emirates see Arsenal draw with Champions

Wow! What a game that was. A game that could have gone either way. Perhaps, a draw was a fair result.

Arsenal started brightly for the first 25 minutes but City nicked a goal against the run of play. Earlier, Welbeck had hit the post after beating Hart with a sumptuous chip.

Arsenal will draw encouragement from the performance of Wilshere. What a terrific game he had! He did what we all know he can. Great at surging forward and opening up the opponent’s defense. He grabbed a beautiful goal to cap his great performance. MOTM for me. Hey! And what a finish by Alexis.
Worryingly for Arsenal was their defending. Perhaps that what cost them the three points. There were numerous moments of criminal defending. The first goal was scored from losing the ball upfront and Flamini lost track of Aguero in the build up for the goal. The second was an abject defending for the corner. Fourth goal we conceded from a header this season. Not good.

Wenger will also ponder over the loss of Debuchy through what seemed a bad injury. Hope things are not bad for him as you realize after Chambers came on, all our first team defenders were on the field bar from Gibbs. Scaring, uh? Hope the failure to sign another defender won’t haunt us.

Were you happy with the draw? For me I cannot complain.

Arsenal vs Manchester City: Arsenal has to turn up against the big boys

Tomorrow early kick off will feature Arsenal versus the champions, Manchester City. Neither a loss or a win for Arsenal will have a significant influence in terms of the title race, but a win for Arsenal will send a statement to the rivals.

Arsenal will have to be at their best to beat the expensively assembled squad of City. They need to find a balance in midfield. They have to change the tactics not only to suit their strengths but also relent the strengths of the opponent.

In the past, Wenger has been criticized for being naive when facing the big teams. He has been criticized for using the same tactics against all opponents. Tomorrow, he has to ensure the team produces a performance similar to the one during the Community Shield.

Good luck to the boys.Hope they make all the Arsenal fans around the world smile.

Who doesn’t relish Arsenal Glory days?

Last night, I watched a couple of our matches in the early 2000s. Oh my what a feeling! I missed those days. The days when Arsenal instigated fear in any team in the world.

As I watched the boys play then, one could see the steel and the undying spirit to win. The fearless stature and confidence in the team was high. So what has changed since then?

A number of factors have changed in the game and at Arsenal since then. At Arsenal, the exit of mercurial players cannot be downplayed. By the way, have we ever replaced Viera? The game has also changed. Title contenders are dictated by their financial power.

Please Wenger, bring back the Arsenal Glory days. We miss them.

Welbeck could be the Sturridge for Arsenal

Danny Welbeck was characteristically unhappy of being played out of position at Manchester United. At Arsenal, the Englishman has the opportunity to play in his preferred central role.

His move to Arsenal has been likened to that move of Sturridge from Chelsea to Liverpool. At Liverpool, Sturridge has played in his preferred central role and has scored loads of goals.

At Arsenal, the Manchester born striker has a manager in Arsene Wenger who will guide him realize his potential maximally. At the age of 23, Welbeck has all the time to achieve the feats of previous Arsenal great strikers.

Did you not like his performance for England vs Switzerland? Expect more from Danny boy.

Who should be Arsenal’s main striker?

Arsenal is currently full of attacking potential especially at the midfield. At the striking department, recruitment of Welbeck has added options. Assuming all our strikers are fit, the question is who should lead our strike force.

In an injury free situation, arsenal will have out and out striking options of Giroud, Welbeck and Sanogo. In addition to that, Arsenal has wingers like Walcott, Alexis and Campbell who can play as strikers in a makeshift role.

So Gooners, who would you prefer to lead our front line?

Who will be the Arsenal player to stand out this season?

Last season, Arsenal saw the meteoric rise of Ramsey. The Welshman caught the eye of every Arsenal fan by his prolific goal scoring form.

A new season is here and the Welshman has picked from where he left last season. With Ramsey having proved his critics wrong, who will be the stand out Arsenal player this season?

The likes of Ozil and Wilshere have been criticized for their below par performances. They have undoubted quality and have the potential to be the best. A great season lies ahead and much more is expected from them.

Marquee signing Alexis Sanchez could also be the other stand out player. Recruited from Barcelona in a big money move, the Chilean will be more than willing to prove his fee.

Youngsters, Sanogo and Campbell could also be in line to prove a point.

Welbeck sale to Arsenal ‘unwelcome’ by former Manchester players

Scholes is the latest former Manchester player to rue the sale of Welbeck to Arsenal. The Englishman was signed by the Gunners at the transfer deadline day.

Speaking to the Independent, Scholes said, ''Naturally, I was sad, as a United fan, to see Welbeck leave this week. My feeling was that if he could have got through this transfer window and stayed at the club he could have been a part of United’s future over the next few years.’’

Earlier on Mike Phelan, Rio Ferdinand and Beckham regretted the sale of Welbeck to Arsenal.

Its time they get over it as the new boy bags goals for Arsenal.

Is Arsenal well covered at the back?

In the recent seasons Arsenal has always been associated with poor defending and individual errors at the back. This trend was however thwarted in the last season as Arsenal kept a joint number of clean sheets with Chelsea.

This season, Arsenal has not kept any clean sheet in the EPL so far. The backline has not been consistent due to injuries and lack of fitness for the key defenders.

In the previous season, the key defenders were Sagna, Per, Kolscieny and Gibbs. With the departure of Sagna, Debuchy was recruited. Monreal has also been deployed as a cover for the injured Gibbs. Chambers has been used as a makeshift defender to cover either for Per or Kolscieny. At left back, an injury to Monreal would mean Flamini as the left back.

With the summer transfer closed, does Arsenal have enough cover at the back? Was there need to recruit another defender as cover for Vermaelen?

Danny Welbeck transfer signals English empire at Arsenal

On the deadline day, Arsenal acquired the services of Danny Welbeck for a reported fee of £16M from Manchester United. The Englishman is expected to stand in for the injured Giroud.

Welbeck’s signing was one of the least expected transfers to take place. However, with the pressure mounting on Wenger to sign a striker, the addition of Welbeck will boost that position.

The signing of Welbeck signals the buildup of an ‘English Empire’ at Emirates. He joins fellow Englishmen like Chambers, Walcott, Ox, Jekinson, Wilshere and Gibbs. It is not surprising as sometimes back Wenger said he will hold the future of the England team.
